Alden
The shoe company, started in 1884, is believed to be New England's last original shoe and boot maker - the sole survivor in a region that once was dotted with shoe and boot factories. Only one other original company is still around, and it makes golf shoes. As it has bucked the trend, Alden has made its mark on American fashion. The iconic men's tassel moccasin ("tassel moc," in Alden speak) is among its enduring creations, widely copied today. The company specializes in classically styled men's boots and dress shoes. Most of the oxfords, wingtips, and loafers in its catalogs have remained unchanged for decades. Alden shoes are manufactured exclusively in Middleborough, inside a vast brick-and-steel building off Interstate 495. Inside, the factory spans 70,000 square feet, and the whirring sound of sewing machines and the heady aroma of leather fill the air. Here, approximately 100 employees produce thousands of shoes for high-end retailers from Manhattan to San Francisco, and fill orders across the globe for customers from Tokyo to Milan. Things come apart
Todd McLellan’s unique photographic vision of the material world: fifty design classics—arranged first by size and then by intricacy—are beautifully displayed, piece by piece, exploding in midair and dissected in real-time, frame-by-frame video stills. This book makes visible the inner workings of some of the world’s most iconic designs. From SLR camera to mantel clock to espresso machine, from iPad to bicycle to grand piano, every single component of each object is revealed. These disassembled objects show that even the most intricate of modern technologies can be broken down and understood, while beautifully illustrating the quality and elegance of older designs. Stunning photography is interspersed with essays by notable figures from the worlds of restoration, DIY, and design innovation who discuss historical examples of teardowns, disassembly, and reverse-engineering. Each photograph is itself a work of art and offers a reinterpretation of our familiar world. They connect people with the child-like joy of taking something apart to see how it works and will appeal to anyone with a curiosity about the material world. Buy the book here

Life's a beach
Martin ParrFollowing on the heels of Martin Parr's limited-edition, album-style presentation of Life's a Beach, released last season, Aperture is delighted to introduce a new beach-bag-sized edition. Parr has been photographing beaches for many decades, documenting all aspects of them, including close-ups of sunbathers, rambunctious swimmers caught mid-plunge, and the eternal sandy picnic underway. His international career, in fact, could well be traced to the launch of The Last Resort, a 1986 book depicting the seaside resort of New Brighton, near Liverpool. What may be less known is that this obsession has led Parr to photograph beaches around the world. This compilation, his first on the topic, presents photos of beachgoers on far-flung shores, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Thailand, and of course, the U.K. The compilation brings to the forefront Parr's engagement with a cherished subject matter-that rare public space in which general absurdities and local quirks seamlessly fuse together. This book shows Parr at his best, startling us with moments of captured absurdity and immersing us in rituals and traditions associated with beach life the world over. Buy the book here.

Scene by
Jeannette MontgomeryEveryone now knows how influential the downtown art scene was in New York in the 1980s and Jeannette Montgomery Barron was fortunate to be right in the thick of it all, close friends with many who became legends. Her portraits of Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Schnabel, Clemente, and many others uniquely captured their personalities, and most importantly, the era. Montgomery Barron wasn't merely a journalist or outsider documenting this scene. The fact that she was good friends with so many of these creative people meant there was instant trust between subject and photographer, resulting in rich, revealing portraiture. Jeannette Montgomery Barron was born in 1956 in Atlanta Georgia and studied at the International Center of Photography in New York. She became known for her portraits of the New York art world in the 1980s, which were later published in Jeannette Montgomery Barron (Edition Bischofberger, Zurich, 1989). Street photographer
Vivian maierA good street photographer must possess many talents: an eye for detail, light, and composition; impeccable timing; a populist or humanitarian outlook; and a tireless ability to constantly shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot and never miss a moment. It is hard enough to find these qualities in trained photographers with the benefit of schooling and mentors and a community of fellow artists and aficionados supporting and rewarding their efforts. It is incredibly rare to find it in someone with no formal training and no network of peers. Yet Vivian Maier is all of these things, a professional nanny, who from the 1950s until the 1990s took over 100,000 photographs worldwide—from France to New York City, to Chicago and dozens of other countries—and yet showed the results to no one. The photos are amazing both for the breadth of the work and for the high quality of the humorous, moving, beautiful, and raw images of all facets of city life in America’s post-war golden age. It wasn’t until realtor and amateur historian John Maloof stumbled upon a box of anonymous negatives in a Chicago auction house in 2007 that any of her marvelous work saw the light of day. Presented here for the first time in print,Vivian Maier: Street Photographer collects the first wave of the best of her incredible body of work—much of which still hasn’t been enlarged or in some case even developed into negatives. Hidden treasures like this don’t come along every day, and powerHouse is excited and honored to present this astounding body of never-before-seen work to the public at large. Buy the book here.

Guy Bourdin
With the eye of a painter, Guy Bourdin created images that contained fascinating stories, compositions, and colours. Using fashion photography as his medium, he sent out his message, one that was difficult to decode, exploring the realms between the absurd and the sublime. Famed for his suggestive narratives and surreal aesthetics, he radically broke conventions of commercial photography with a relentless perfectionism, and sharp humour. This tome is a road trip through Bourdins visual landscape; a collage of images that maps his artistic search and vision. The texts, polaroids, poems, sketches and contact sheets unfold in real time through the memories of model Nicolle Meyer, a muse to Bourdin. Given total creative freedom, and with uncompromising artistic ethic, Guy Bourdin captured the imagination of a whole generation. The late 1970s, recognized as the highest note in his career, is the focal point of the work. This revisited edition, originally printed as two volumes, is the first monograph in a forthcoming set of eight books which explore the most outstanding and undiscovered work thus far. Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) was born in Paris. His career as a fashion photographer spans over three decades, shooting largely for Vogue Paris, as well as Harpers Bazaar, Chanel, Issey Miyake, Versace, Charles Jourdan, and Emanuel Ungaro. Today, his work is exhibited in the most prestigious museums, such as The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Jeu de Paume, and The National Museum of China, and his images have a cult-like following amongst the fashion set. New Icons of Fashion Illustration
Fashion illustration is and always has been about far more than pretty drawings of pretty dresses. This lavish celebration of today's leading artists in the field showcases the timeless craft and amazing diversity that characterize the genre. From David Downton to Cecilia Carlstedt and from Jason Brooks to Jordi Labanda, 28 masters of fashion illustration from across the world are featured, one by one, in a grand tour of the best work currently produced. While some illustrators create daringly bold graphics, others prefer delicate watercolours and ink drawings. Throughout the volume, both hi-tech multimedia effects and traditional drawing skills are given pride of place, with many of the artists using a mixture of techniques. Lively commentary accompanies the images, while interviews with each illustrator provide further insight into their influences and methods. Buy the book here!
